Weekend Trip to Kaohsiung!

Train ride to Kaohsiung....we left at 6:30 am, caught the train at 7:00, and arrived in Kaohsiung at 10:00. I slept the whole way!

On the metro! Our new friend Ariel and her cousin....most kids speak English--some are too shy to talk to us, but not Ariel.

Welcome to the 2009 World Games! We tried to get tickets to Sumo Wrestling, but they were all sold out....in fact, everything was sold out! So sad. We had a great time anyway.

Just the girls!

The new Stadium...so big, so nice!

Lisa and Sunny--they teach in Feng Yuan. We just love them. They are so fun!

In front of the World Games stadium! A typhoon was coming in--it was super windy!

In front of the Chiang Kai-shek statue. Chiang was the 1st President of Taiwan in 1950. Although he prohibited Taiwan Independence, he was against communism and brought many people to Taiwan. His picture is posted on the Taiwanese dollar.

A little meditation for the soul!

The group! This is where we met Mike....our mormon friend from Boise, Idaho....how ironic.

We hiked to the top of this mountain in Kaohsiung to see the beautiful view, old temple, and British Consulate. Julia, me, and Charles (they were great tour guides).

Down below to the left is National Sun Yat-sen University....looks like a prison eh, I would hate to go to school right on the beach....poor kids, NOT! Charles is in graduate school there.

Sweet Buddhist Temple.

Lisa and I....burning ghost money!

Ferry ride to the island of Cihou!

The Squat! Every Asian does the squat...anywhere, anytime! Flat footed on the ground, try it, its more difficult than it looks--don't lift those heels! Charles is an expert.

The Tianhou Temple in Cihou. This temple is the most ancient temple to Kaohsiung. It was built in 1673 (it has been reconstructed many times to withstand typhoons and to keep out bandits). The goddess, Mazu, is worshiped here.

Fish anyone? Notice the frogs to the right! Scrumptious.

I must be famous! When I first arrived in Taiwan, Hanna and Sarah kept telling me how much Americans are gawked at here, "Just be prepared" they said...I hadn't noticed much 'gawking' until this cute little girl, Ruby, asked to take a picture with me. Her mom just kept snappin' shots....my very own papparazi

We hiked to the top of this mountain in Cihou...The view was beautiful!

Another shot of the view....we even watched the sunset over the ocean....amazing!

Roomies! Standing at the front gates of the abandoned fortress! It was destroyed by the Japanese. This is also on top of the mountain....along with a lighthouse that is perched just to the left.

Watching the fireworks over Love River!
