Chapter 12 PICTURES!

A bit of everything!

Hiking with Megan's mom, Peggy (one of my students parents)...yes, there were stairs as usual! We found this cool rope bridge, then took a rest on these 'stretching devices' at the top of the mountain, haha!

So I caught a bit of a cold....I'm actually surprised I've gone so long without getting sick, working around the kids and all. No worries, I got my meds and face mask....doctors orders!

I couldn't say I love Asia without mentioning the great shopping. Dress $3.00 Shoes $6.00....anyone want anything? Let me know!

Spent the weekend with Torry. On Saturday we decided to ride scooters to this sweet Wetland outside of Taichung. Tabbi and Hanna came with us. We had a fun time snappin' shots and running after the little crabs everywhere!

The group! Ma and Pa Li took us to the wetland and then to lunch afterward. They are the funnest couple ever--so laid back...we all had a fun time together!

Eating dinner at the Modern Toilet! Yes, our drinks were served in urinals, our food in toilets, and our dessert....squatters, ONLY IN TAIWAN! The Thai coconut curry was pretty tasty!

Chapter 12

Once again, sorry it's late! Pictures will be posted soon!

Monday, September 7th

I woke up with a sore throat this morning….oh no! I thought, I can’t get sick; my job is ‘talking!’ Just shake it off Tanier! I try not to let the common cold keep me from having fun, so this morning I woke up early to go hiking with one of my student’s parents. Megan’s mom, Peggy, picked me up about 8 a.m. and we drove to the top of Bagwahsan, pretty much the only mountain in Changhua, where we hiked around for an hour or so. It was a lot of fun—of course it was HOT (I brought my sweat rag), but it was exercise, something different from the monotony I’m feeling running at the track!

I love hiking in Asia: the stair climbing is great for the calves, and at every rest stop, a jungle gym of sorts is set in place to stretch. The scenery is beautiful, and I always find myself coming upon cool old bridges (we found and old rope bridge this time, sweet).

After hiking, I had extra time before I needed to be back for work so Peggy told me she’d take me to the ‘branch.’ Huh? Peggy’s English is pretty good, but I was struggling trying to figure this one out…usually a game of gestures will end the guessing game, but because we were in the car, it wasn’t feasible. Peggy and I were both trying to figure it out….she then said the word ‘cow’…..ding, light bulb…..we were going to the ranch! At the ranch, we indulged in a milk popsicle (typical treat in Taiwan…frozen milk cream), and she even bought me a half gallon of fresh milk….yummy….gotta get that calcium! Once again, Heavenly Father knows just what I need. Saturday I bought some cereal at Costco, but they were out of milk…..then Peggy was so kind that she insisted I take some from her, so sweet!

Tuesday, September 8th

Alright, so I broke down and went to see Dr. T today. I asked Sherry, my boss, for a good place to buy some meds for my cold and she was adamant that I go to a doctor. I walked into the doc’s office, no appointment…I waited maybe 40 minutes, saw Dr. T for 10, got my drugs, and was out the door $3.US dollars lighter. I couldn’t believe it!

When Dr. T asked about my ‘condition’….I leaned forward and softly said, “Nothing but a sore throat and cold.” It was soooo funny, her and the other nurses started bustling around, frantically looking for a face mask, “put this on,” she said. Man, it’s not like I have Swine Flu (or H1N1 if you ask anyone around here). I absolutely hate being sick, but I must say…working around all these sweaty, germy children, I’m pleasantly surprised I’ve lasted this long!

In class today Megan came up to me with a beige ball cap, “It’s for you!” she said. Laughing to myself, I wondered what the cap was for. Well, Peggy noticed I didn’t have a hat on when we went hiking, and she found out I didn’t have a hat at all, so she wanted to make sure I was taken care of. I now have a hat so I won’t get ‘black!’ Thanks Peg!

Language exchange ended about 8 p.m. this evening so I thought I’d head down to Clothes Street to see the summer sales. Sherry knows I love a good bargain…and clothes….so she informed me that all the summer sales are going on now. I found a fun shirt and two dresses for just $9.US dollars! In fact, I got the two dresses from that same store that wouldn’t let me try on any ‘sale’ items. I decided to give the place another chance—the same retail clerk was working. She walked over to me, but instead of pushing me out of the store, she kindly told me that it would be alright if I tried on some clothes; thus, instead of one dress, I bought two! Oh the art of reciprocity at work!

Wednesday, September 9th

This morning Sarah and I met another Expat from Pennsylvania at Go Go for Her. Her name is Rayne and her and her husband had originally planned to stay here for 10 months, it’s turned into seven years! She’s way cool. We chatted for a little bit and she totally offered to take us to Costco whenever we need the ride—we foreigners gotta stick together!

After lunch the girls and I hit up Morning market before it shut down for the day. We mainly window shopped, but we did find some nice cheap sandals, $2.US. YAY!

Let me just say that I love the SPE children; however, there are a few kids, as you know, who continually try my patience. You’ve heard about Joe, but have you heard about Kevin??? I don’t know why, but he’s almost worse than Joe….I know, can it be possible? He’s just so smug….he’ll look at me with his cunning little grin right before he does something wrong, like pour the water from his water bottle all over the floor, oh this child! Well, today he decided to do something a little different….He locked the door to the Art room, AKA, my room! That little fart—I could just shake that boy. Sherry, nor Emily, had a key to get into the room, so we had to wait for Uncle Joe, about an hour. My last group of SPE’s didn’t get art, I felt so bad!

Teaching my 7A children is sooo fun! They make it all worth it. Tonight, JoAnna and Martin brought me a stemmed bun, ground pork and onions wrapped in a flour roll….it is so YUMMY! Those kids are so good to me—I love teaching them!

Thursday, September 10th

Go Go night! We invited the secretaries to come with us to kickboxing tonight! We had a great time! Emily is a tall, skinny Asian—she looks like a ballerina. You should have seen her kickboxing, so graceful…and then there’s me, I’ve got the death, gripped fists and my bottom lip tucked up under my teeth like I’m gonna rage on someone! Ha, the girls were making fun of me, but it’s just so much more fun when you get into it! Am I right?

At the night market after Go Go, Hanna and I got our coconut milk, which by the way, is sold by the half gallon….oh so good, I see it now…granola cereal, a sliced banana, coconut milk…delicious! I got my usual dumplings, but then we saw Julie (from our ‘hood), and she had us try some new things….different type of pigs blood, oyster goo, and squid balls. The squid was great…it had wasabi on drizzled all over it; I think I found a new dish!

Friday, September 11th

I taught my 2A students about mysteries today…oh they loved it! I think this particular class was the quietest I’ve ever seen them. Jaws dropped, eyes opened wide….it was so entertaining. I got out some puzzle pieces and told them how solving a mystery is much like piecing a puzzle together. First, I told them the mystery of the stolen car, Mitch’s stolen car, which was found months later. Second, I told them a fictional mystery I made up on the fly about Teacher Tabbi and myself and how we ditched the other teachers….the other teachers got really upset and one of them, we don’t know who, destroyed my classroom and took all my candy! For a moment, I had to remind the kids that the story was all fake. At break, when the mystery had yet to be solved, I could hear the girls in my class talking about who they thought committed the crime….so FUN! I had my kids write about who they thought the culprit was in their exercise books, we’ll see what they have to say….Teacher Sarah, Teacher Hanna, or Teacher Sam.

I have a new favorite SPE student, Jimmy! At first I wondered about this wiry one, but he’s definitely grown on me. For some reason, all the kids think it’s funny to give Teacher a ‘high 5’ with all the strength they possess. Ouch! It’s not so fun for teacher…I’m trying to train them….well, Jimmy caught on real fast and now it’s like a game. He’ll give me a soft pat on the hand, then lean in for an automatic hug, it’s so sweet—we’re tight!

Tonight, after work, I took the train up to Torry’s place in Taichung! I was scheduled to meet Torry outside of the train station around 7:40 p.m. but it ended up being more like 9:00 p.m. I was in my seat and all of the sudden I felt the train come to a screeching stop. I was so tired and out of it that I didn’t think anything of it at first, I just thought it was an abrupt stop, but nothing out of the ordinary. Then everyone started flooding to the doors….I didn’t know what was going on so I turned to the lady sitting next to me and asked what had happened (for some reason, I always assume they speak English….I’m really not trying to be an ‘ugly American’…lucky for me, she did understand). With her little English she began to tell me that there was an accident and we had to evacuate the train. Another man, to my right, confirmed the accident, and said someone had gone over the train tracks as we were crossing, eek! I didn’t get any further details. My seat was at the far end of the train so we had to stay put for quite some time. By the time it was our turn to evacuate, we walked through a couple cars before finding out everything was now taken care of and we could go back to our seats!

Man, I hope whoever was in the accident is fine! I was a little worried about how to reach Torry because I don’t have a phone….I used my new friend’s phone to contact Torry and she was able to meet me….my new friend’s waited with me at the station entrance while I waited for Torry, again….such nice people! Torry and I drove back to her place by scooter. When we arrived home, she had a chicken broccoli casserole warm, and waiting for me….with Tiramisu for dessert….she soooo spoils me!

Saturday, September 12th

WETLAND-SCOOTER ROADTRIP! Torry and I woke up early to go and pick up Hanna and Tabbi from the train station! Torry had her scooter, and I was driving her brothers….she asked me whether I’d ever driven a scooter before…ha, she didn’t ask when….I nodded. Whether I’ve ever driven a scooter before is not the point, I don’t think anyone is prepared to drive a scooter in Taiwan traffic—you just gotta brace yourself and get out there….aggressive driving is defined in a whole new way now! Tabbi rode with me, we had a great time, and I only threw her off about once, ha! No worries, I am slightly exaggerating, but really, the traffic is bad! The experts say, “Just drive as if you’re in a video game, never look back!” Yipee for you dad, I’m preparing for my roadster!

The four of us drove about 45 minutes until we came to a little town on the outskirts of Taichung. Torry has some good friends in the town that she met on her mish. We visited them first before going to the Wetland….Ma and Pa Li, two of the greatest new peeps I’ve met. They are so laid back and easy going. They took us to the wetland, let us splash around a bit, and then took us to a great little eatery for Asian tacos and other yummies! We also had Bing…the slushy ice topped with almond bean, tapioca pearls, sweet potato, passion fruit, taro, and more. Ya it sounds gross, just wait till you’ve lived in a foreign country for three months…it’s amazing!

The wetland was fun—water, crabs, and windmills. The water was so warm, not sure why, not sure I want to know, but it was nice! We walked along the coast, watching others and playing with the crabs! They were EVERYWHERE! I’ve never seen anything like it! The ground was literally moving….the crabs blended in with the mud we couldn’t necessarily see them all the time, but we could definitely hear them creeping around. We’d try so hard to hold still so the little things would come out of their holes, but they were definitely afraid of us. A ways in front of us, you could see the crabs coming up on the sand, we’d start running towards them and down they’d go again. We had a good time!

On our way back from the wetland we found a little trinket store full of fun souvenirs—dirt cheap. I started to go crazy buyin’ up everything! We got back to the Li’s house and took a ‘rest’….only in Asia! Yes, I actually nestled in on their coach for a nice hour long nap!

Tonight we went to the church for Branch games—no one was there! Alright, President and Bush were there, but that didn’t make enough peeps for games, so after a half hour of waiting, all of us girls and Bush decided to go out for a bite. We went to the Modern Toilet. It was quite the restaurant. You sit on toilets and eat over a bathtub. Drinks come in urinals, meals in toilets, and dessert….oh yes, squatters, don’t worry, it was sanitary…I think! I got the Thai coconut chicken curry, to die for! This restaurant was fun, maybe I’ll open one up in StG…

Sunday, September 13th

I spent the night at Torry’s once again. We went to church, rested, read, napped, and had a great lazy day! Tonight we went to a stake relief society meeting….eh, two hours in Chinese, not my thing. I was having a rough time. Sister T (Torry) was translating for us, but even she was getting bored. We learned all good things of course, but really, two hours is a long time to sit in a meeting. Why am I telling you this??? Well, of course every meeting has refreshments, and our refreshments were sushi rolls and cranberry juice! I chuckled softly to myself, Welcome to Taiwan!

Chapter 11

Tribute to my 2A-1 class....Last week was my last time teaching my little 2A-1's....AKA, my angel class. Our school has been flooded with more afternoon SPE's--with too many hours, I had to give up my little chileans to Tabbi Cat--they love her. Good luck Tabbi, you'll do wonders!

Crazy Teacher Tanier!

COSTCO trip! Yay....after searching through the entire store, I walked away with a long awaited bag of cereal and some fruit snacks--Oh the comfort foods! When we were done eating, we went and ate downstairs, MORE FOOD! We were diggin' the pizza and hot dogs! Thanks Molls!

Chapter 11

I know there is a lot of reading this week, but I had to catch up on week 10 and 11....there are some pictures, but more to come, so stay tune! I love you all! T

Monday, August 31st

So Chinese school started today and the schedule has officially changed. No morning SPE’s for now (keep your fingers crossed), just afternoon, and there are a lot of afternoon….they are so cute. We have so many new kids, and most of them barely speak any English, I’m so excited to see their English skills improve over the next four months!

Last week was Valentines Day in Taiwan, so today, when I was teaching my 2A-2’s, one of the new SPE’s (Sara) came into my classroom to give me a treat for Valentines. She doesn’t speak any English, but she’s good at mimicking. She was a little hesitant to interrupt my class, but when I beckoned her to come in she came right to me and held up this little shadow box that had each square covered in paper. She pointed at a square, I knew if broke through the paper I would find a surprise—sure enough, a candy and a sticker. She is so sweet; after I took my candy, she turned around and left the room, having not said one word…precious!

Tuesday, September 1st

Wahoo…..September already! I know I came to Taiwan at the end of June, but still…..thinking that I’ve already been here since June is just beyond me. Let’s see, wanna know what else I’ve been thinking, this is the first time in 18 years that I will not be going back to school after the summer….well now, I am a teacher, but still, something to think about. BYU started yesterday and I am definitely going to miss BYU football, GO COUGS!

Now that Chinese school is back in progress, everyone is freaking out about getting H1N1 (swine flu)….they don’t say swine flu around here because they don’t want people to be frightened to eat pork. Anyhow, so many people are wearing masks around…I mean, the Taiwanese already wear masks on their scooters so they can keep the pollution from affecting them, and people already wear face masks when they’re sick….but now, more than I’ve seen so far, people are wearing face masks. Little Jimmy came into school today with his mask on, I asked if he was sick, “No,” he said, “I don’t want to get H1N1”…yeah, he’s five. I also had two of my older kids wearing face masks—I asked them what the big deal was and they said three people from their school have H1N1…eek!

Chinese/English exchange was tonight. I was working with Ken. He plans to go to Vegas next week for a bike convention, so I was helping him with some phrases and things. I told him to give a shout out to St. George for me! I am slowly learning more Chinese, but I just can’t study….it must be that whole ‘I’m graduated’ mentality.

Wednesday, September 2nd

This morning Sarah and I got up at 7:30 AM to go to ‘Go Go for Her.’ We bought a pass so we can take more classes. The class we went to this morning was only a half hour, but it was intense….we were moving the whole time—there was no stopping. This class was a bit different than the kickboxing we’ve been to, we actually did some crazy Asian dance moves…I felt super uncoordinated.

I got a new student in my 7A class today. His name is Alex and he is hilarious. He is the typical video game junkie that has no social skills, kind of like Napoleon Dynamite; yet, he is insanely smart and he talks very fast. Both of his parents are doctors and he studied in Canada for awhile—I think his reading ability is better than mine. Some of the comments Alex makes are just so funny and he doesn’t realize it. My 7A’s are pretty fluent, so they totally understand what’s going on and we all laugh together, Alex likes to chime in too, but he has no idea ‘what’ we’re laughing at. He’ll definitely bring some entertainment to our classroom.

Tonight after class I went downstairs to see my kids off for the evening. Martin and JoAnna’s dad, Frank, had come to pick the kids up….they brought me homemade rice dumplings—so nice! I just love the Ko family. They are so good to me!

Thursday, August 3rd

Today was bitter sweet. We teachers found out that we will be getting even more SPE’s in the afternoon, so that means, more hours. Well, I already have a lot of teaching hours, but I have to teach more SPE’s because we don’t have a lot of teachers….thus, my 2A-1’s are no longer mine….sad. They’re my best class too. Teacher Tabbi will be taking over (she had some extra hours to fill) and she’ll do a great job, but I am still sad. On the bright side, I will have a little more time to prepare for my lessons and focus more on the kids that I do teach!

Kickboxing time! Sarah and I were able to get Hanna to go with us to kickboxing tonight! Man, I just love that class, and the coach is kinda cute too, that’s always a plus….haha, he’s Asian….I think I’ve been here too long (jk, I do not mean that in any derogatory way)! Our coach works us out hard, I’d start to slack off and he’d come down from the stage and just get in my face, oh dear, I thought, I better pick it up!

After kickboxing we went to Carrefour and the night market, this was our second time, so Sarah and I officially say ‘its tradition’….Kickboxing, Carrefour, night market, YAY! At the night market we saw so many foreigners….they were definitely coming out of the woodwork—in little Changhua, I’ve never seen so many white people. We also saw a Taiwanese transvestite who was wearing pigtails and red lipstick. He kept following us around the market, kinda freaky! I don’t think he was all there.

Friday, September 4th

Progress reports were due today….WOW…I’m glad they’re over. Those things took forever; I always hate putting down the bad stuff, I just want to fill the reports with “your child’s great,” “I love having them in class,” but on every report I wrote some things the kids could improve on….the parents like to know that they are getting their money’s worth—if their child can’t improve on anything, they might as well take them out of the program; yet, at the same time, you have to be careful because if you write down a lot of improvements, the kids may get hit (yes, beaten) by their parents, eh…it’s a fine line!

Girls night! After work, me, Tabbi, Hanna, Sarah, Julia, and Molly all went to see The Proposal, it just hit theaters here in Taiwan—I also saw it in America before I left, crazy! After our frilly chickflick we went to this little shop and got waffles and ice cream….so yummy! Wow, really…I had a straight waffle full of vanilla ice cream sandwiched inside. I absolutely loved it. This little diner also has waffles that come with hummus and vegetables, next time I’m definitely trying it!

When we arrived home after the movie our other friend Julie was waiting at our place. She brought us wintermelon juice and some fired chicken—she is always thinking of others. We were so surprised to see her because she is always working, but she now has Wednesday’s and Saturday’s free so she can play with us, hooray!

Saturday, September 5th

I believe this is the first Saturday I’ve stayed home since I’ve been here in Taiwan, and even then…we didn’t really stay home….but it was nice to have the first part of the day at home for a change. This afternoon we went to Costco with Molly! Costco is just in Taichung, where we go all the time, but you always need someone with a Costco card; Molly was our saving grace. We made a day of the trip—it’s quite the treat to go to Costco!

Wow, I never knew the smell of cardboard could remind me so much of home! I was in heaven; I saw dad’s mixed nuts that he always buys, and mom’s cracker mix that she sprinkles atop her salad each night! ….American food, and not just any American food, but really, really good American food; however, it all seems quite expensive now. It’s funny how the fish is so cheap here and everything else is so pricey. For the most part, I just looked around to see what Costco had….ugh, everything! Luckily I just walked away with some cereal (Quakers natural granola that we have at home…oh I’ve been missing cereal) and some fruit snacks; I didn’t want to splurge because food goes bad fast with all the moisture in the air….we use the fridge and freezer to preserve some stuff, but we’re also fed lunch at school, so I didn’t need too much, but….now I know what I CAN get when I WANT it…..chocolate chips, tortillas, salsa, chocolate muffins, lettuce, cheese, lunch meat, wheat bread, pistachios, cereal….be grateful people, you got it made!

Costco was packed, I couldn’t believe all the people there, and did I mention the sampling lines….oh yes, people go crazy over samples here…everything to the extreme. I just couldn’t stand to wait in those long lines. After we grabbed our comfort foods, we went downstairs to EAT, haha; I got a nice slice of Hawaiian style pizza, and then Tabbi and I shared a churro (kinda bland) and mango frozen yogurt (not diggin the mango sauce). However, that pizza was probably the best I’d ever had….WOW….why does my life seem to revolve around food?

Well, its official, Molly is leaving us. My first Taiwanese friend and she’s moving to Australia. Good luck Molly! She’s flying out on Tuesday. Tonight was Molly’s night. She wanted to go to Clothes Street so we went to Clothes Street. Once again, I saw some really fun clothes and accessories—summer sales are beginning now, I love it!

I saw the cutest dress for $100NT ($3. US)….I was going to buy it after making sure it fit alright, but the store employees wouldn’t let me use the fitting room because it was a ‘SALE’ item. What? I thought, that is absurd! I can understand them not letting me return a sale item, but really, not to let me try it on. I tried to explain to the lady that if she would just let me try it on, and the dress fit, I would totally buy it, but if I couldn’t try it on, I wouldn’t make the purchase at all….she’s wasn’t having it. Wow! I am just too stubborn and $100NT is too precious to me now (I can buy two or three dinners for that kind of money)…I told the lady her policy was bad for business and walked out of the store. Alright, maybe I was a little dramatic, especially over $3 dollars, but…as a business woman, I just don’t see the point in the policy. Maybe if the fitting rooms were full and I was taking up other shopper’s time by trying on the sale item, I could possibly understand, but no, the store was practically empty. You see, now I will not refer anyone to that store…they’ve lost my business and many others….Ha! Alright, so maybe when I settle down over this minute issue I’ll go back and get the dress, but for now, it’s a no go!

Sunday, September 6th

Yay for church! Because today was fast Sunday, our ward broke our fast together after our auxiliary meetings. We had pot luck, so there was so much food! Elder and Sister Dowse made sandwiches, with ham and cheese….and lettuce….I was so happy! We had a little bit of everything….fried rice, dumplings, pudding, fruit, chips, rolls, taro cake (which is rather tasty), cheesecake, and as always, ice cream! Everything was wonderful!

I also had to teach today because it was my month to conduct! I gave a lesson on General Conference….it’s coming up, I’m so excited! Start preparing now!

Torry came to our ward today; it was so great to see her. After church she taught me a little Chinese. She told me she’s going to test me so I better practice….my goal is to talk to five people for each new phrase I learned. She taught me all the question words: How, who, what, why (in Chinese, all the question words go at the end of sentences). ….and FYI…words such as it, am, are in English, only have a single word translation in Chinese. Yes, I can say one word for all those meanings, glorious, and who said Chinese was hard….haha, just teasing, it is very challenging, mainly the tones and different sounds!

Well, I may actually be catching up on my journaling. I’m starting to get a sore throat that I am not happy about….this is not a good thing for a teacher. Sarah gave me some Asian miracle drug, I’m gonna go take it now, wish me well! Love you! T

Chapter 10

Monday, August 24th

Not a lot happened today, just the same old stuff at work. Oh my…little, hellion, SPE Joe will not be to school at all this week….I feel so bad for saying this, but his absence is exactly what I’ve been needing. Maybe for just a minute I can actually work on the kids’ speech, rather than behavior and discipline the whole time.

The summer is coming to an end, so all of the teacher’s schedules will be changing a bit—as of right now, next week us teachers won’t have any morning SPE’s…YAY! This means we’ll have a little extra time to get our classrooms and the school organized, and of course….sleep in—we’ll have to be to work around 11:00/noonish, so nice!

Tuesday, August 25th

We only had one morning SPE group this morning, so Tabbi went in for our shift…I got to stay home and talk to mom and dad, THANKS TABBI—it was yet again, just what I needed. After such a busy weekend doing home visits, I needed a little time to recuperate.

With Joe being absent, I haven’t had to raise my voice as much, ha! I’ve really been able to be fun and silly with the kids! I hate yelling, so I’m trying to adopt this different way of discipline…I hope this silly thing works. Any ideas for disciplining 5 year-old's?

After language exchange, Sarah and I went and got gratin—Asian casserole. It tasted just like Sheppard’s Pie, one of my favorites, but instead of mashed potatoes, it was filled with rice. Don’t worry mom, your food is still the best, irreplaceable!

Wednesday, August 26th

After work today, Sammy invited me to go rock climbing…so, of course, I went! I’ve never really been rock climbing, but you know, I’ve taken on the challenge of the portable rock wall, so I thought, how hard can it be. Well, let me tell you….it’s much harder than it looks, but I did it!

At the university near our apartment, the rock climbing club meets a couple times a week to rock climb a 40 foot wall near the track. The club let Sammy and I borrow their gear since we have none. I met a cool guy, Jeffery, who is a professor at Changhua University. He is a retired Marine, who happens to speak English, so he was able to help me with my climbing….Sammy did too, he’s a pro!

With my lack of endurance I only climbed twice, and although it was a struggle, I did climb to the top both times! Jeffery was very impressed….I was too! He said 97% of people who try climbing their first time don’t make it to the top…eh, beginners luck. I had fun though; maybe I’ve found a new hobby!

Thursday, August 27th

Hanna and I had a Home Visit with YoYo and Engine tonight (two of our students) at their house. To get their, Hanna and I followed Engine and his mom on our bikes—it was classic. Engine’s mom hardly speaks a lick of English so when she came to pick Engine up from school, our secretary, Emily, just told Hanna and I to follow that scooter. There were no introductions whatsoever. I just started pedaling, hoping I could keep up with the scooter; Hanna and I kept thinking, I hope we don’t lose ‘em—they all look alike. Engine’s mom didn’t look back at us once to see whether we were following her; for a moment, I questioned whether we were supposed to be following her at all, but then we hit a red light and I was quickly reassured we were in the green.

At Engine’s house, we all played a little uno (by far the kids’ favorite game) and watched the two boys, along with their cute little brother, show us their skills in Kung Fu—wow they can kick high! “Wah say!” I said, showing my excitement…..then I repeated myself in English, so the boys would know the difference, “Holy Cow!” Whoops, there I went again, Teacher Tanier, swearin’ in my student’s home. The word, ‘cow’ in Chinese means, SH%@T! YoYo caught on rather quickly and started tuggin’ on his mom’s shirt, “Mom, Mom, Teacher said SH%@T!” Hanna couldn’t stop laughing, neither could I….it was pretty funny!

While we were playing games, Engine’s family filled us with Coco Cola (as they say) and some yummy dragon fruit, we got rice cakes too! WOW, that family knows how to drink Coke. All three boys each grabbed a liter of Coke….their mom started yelling for them to put the unopened coke away….they did as they were told and came back with two opened liters—no wonder it looks as if YoYo never brushes his teeth, they’re stained with coke. The dragon fruit was delicious, but no one else was eating, so Hanna and I ate a whole bowl by ourselves….I was sick!

We had a great time with the boys; the best part was Engine’s grandma. Every time the boys would get a little rambunctious, gremmie would get out her bamboo stick and start tapping it against her hand. You could tell she was gettin’ ready to strike….it didn’t seem to phase the boys much; YoYo leaned into Hanna and said, “We’re not scared of her, she’s too slow!” So gooda!

Today I played ‘capture the flag’ with my SPE’s in gym….they’ve picked up on a new phrase. I was on little Flora’s team, and we were playing against Tim and Jimmy. Tim would watch me as I tried to get the flag, hands held out, curling his fingers, “Come on baby!” Haha, I was dying laughing, where did he hear this stuff….it was hilarious. Jimmy chimed in too, it was cute.

Tonight we went out to McDonald’s with the ‘super students’ (every two months we take some kids to McD’s)…we had fun playing uno and other games. McDonald’s is always a treat, the kids absolutely love it, and it’s a fun way to get to know our students outside of class.

After McDonald’s, Hanna and I took the scooter out for a ride. We went to a yummy chocolate store and stocked up on some goods. Then we found ourselves at ‘The Body Shop’….yes, the same one in America. Unfortunately, Body Shop products cost the same as they do in the states, so we didn’t get anything; instead, we headed down to Watson’s (like Walgreens) and hung out there for a bit looking a different skin products….I got some lavender facial masks, FUN!

Temple Trip! Sarah and I got on a bus this morning at 8:00 to Taipei, the trip takes about 2 ½ hours one way. When we arrived in Taipei, we were supposed to meet up with some of the teachers from the other school; unfortunately, we never found them, so we decided to make our way to the temple ourselves…surprisingly, we got around town pretty well. We didn’t get lost once. We took the metro, which is super easy here, and nice and clean!

Before going into the temple for baptisms, we walked around and got a bite to eat. Sarah and I both shared a rice ball, noodles, and a delicious mango slush custard (mango on shaved ice with a gelatin like custard, YUMMY)! We went back to meet the other teachers at the temple, but once again, our schedules were off—they arrived later at the temple, so they were far behind us in baptisms, and there were a lot of people at the temple. Baptisms went well—can I just say one thing…the font is sooooo small that the brothers have to kneel down in the water so they won’t hit their head when they go under the water to be baptized, crazy!

From baptisms, Sarah and I met up with Sammy and we made our way over to the Chiang Kai Shek memorial. On our way, we stopped at the bountiful living store and bought ourselves the coolest, authentic, Chinese scripture covers—mine are bright red, covered with gold dragons and lions (as I said early, the dragons symbolize the Emperor’s son, and the lions are good luck. If a man has a dream about dragons, he may just be the next king. If a woman has a dream about dragons, she will be blessed with many sons)!

The memorial was built in memory of Taiwan’s first President, Chiang Kai Shek. He died not to long ago, just in 1975. The memorial is surrounded by a beautiful park and the main building covers 240,000 square meters. Inside the main building, there is an exhibit that depicts the life of Chiang Kai Shek, and there is also a traveling exhibit, which happened to be all about astronomy. We had a fun time. Sammy is totally into science, so he kept us informed about everything. I was reintroduced to Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, and many other great scientists, astronomers, and philosophers. Sarah and I got these cool silhouette pictures taken of ourselves. The background of the pictures is the galaxy and our body image is depicted as a new constellation….they were fun pics to take.

Traveling to Taipei is kinda far, so we always try to make a day trip out of it—there’s a ton to see. After walking around the memorial, we took the metro to the National Palace Museum. This art museum is one of the largest in the world, 15th most visited in the world, with over 650,000 pieces of Chinese artifacts. It has over 8,000 years of Chinese history. We had a fun time….we saw lots of pottery, water color paintings, and jade sculptures…including the jade cabbage, which was the supposed ‘sight to see!’ By this point in the day however, Sarah and I were a bit tired—we made the best of it by imagining up fun stories to go along with the historical artifacts.

Happy Birthday to my good friend Jules, the soon to be mommy!

We girls went to church today in Taichung as usual. We had a scheduled home visit with max and Vivian after church, so we walked to Chung You department store to meet the family. They had planned to take us to the Dinosaur museum, but it started pouring rain and that shot our plans down pretty quick. Plan B, the fam took us back to Changhua so we could tour around Bagwashan….yet again, the rain came down. Plan C, we went to Max and Vivian’s home to join in the birthday fun for their cousin and grammie!
Max and Vivian were so excited for us teachers to go to their home. Vivian kept saying, “Oh teacher, our house is SO big!” She got me intrigued to see what I was in for….well, we rolled up to their house, which was rather large….four stories, fairly wide for a Taiwanese home, and it even came with a huge, grass backyard….you never find that here…don’t get me wrong, there home is still far from anything you’ll ever find in the states, but it was great in Taiwanese standards; however, the kids still share a room? Interesting.

Well, we didn’t get much time to play inside the house….for the birthday party, us girls and the rest of the fam (extended and all) were stuffed inside a small dusty office that sat next to the house, strange???? …when a huge house was across the way…..maybe a little.

Oh man, we got to try another tasty Taiwanese treat….but it wasn’t that tasty, eek! Vivian’s mom had been telling us about some great food she wanted us to try all day. After explaining the meal in Chinglish, we came to the conclusion that the food was a stemmed bum, quite scrumptious….well, poor communication can leave one dry-heaving as they try to gag down the alien goo wrapped mystery meat….yup, words can’t describe. Oh it was awful, and Sarah, Tabbi, and I were the only ones eating, the rest of the family was just watching. I just kept thinking, Tanier, eat, eat, eat…think Jr. Whooper, anything….when you’re done eating, you can grab a peach and a few grapes from the table to take away the gooey (literally ‘gooey’) taste. Luckily, we girls made it through to enjoy a yummy chocolate birthday cake ten minutes later—that was a real treat, and surprisingly tasty!

After cake, Vivian and Max played the piano for us and then we went out to play baseball. I can’t believe I tell people I used to play softball….I struck out twice….alright, I was using a plastic bat that was made for an eight-year-old, but really, twice??? We had fun anyway.

Before calling it a day, we went out to dinner with Max and Vivian….I know, we weren’t too hungry after the goo, but the family insisted. We went to a really great restaurant that I’d like to try again. The meat was deliciously flavored and it came with some rice, of course, and bean sprouts. The only upsetting part of the meal would be when Jason, Vivian’s youngest brother, decided he was sick from drinking ‘cold water’ (yes, the Asian’s don’t like cold water—it’s bad for you), and he threw up all over the floor. I looked over at the most inopportune moment. Best part, the restaurant employee swept up the vomit with a broom before mopping up the floor…CRINGE. Jason was then given a bucket in case the incident happed again. No, he was not taken to the bathroom….No, he didn’t wash his hands….Yes, we went on eating as if nothing had happened. Haha.

What an adventurous day! Vivian and Max’s family was so gracious and I really did have a great time. I will miss those kids in SPE’s. They’re off to Chinese school now!

Chapter 9

A couple weeks ago, Kitty's parents took all us teachers out for dinner. We went to a really nice restaurant called Tasty! The food was amazing--7 courses. I think this picture of Kitty pretty much sums everything up!

Girls night out! Sarah and I went to Taichung to stay the night at Torry's. We made yummy American cookies--mom's 'secret' recipe, and we gave ourselves pedicures and facials...oh so nice!

Torry and her nephew Leongan! He decided he wanted to hang out with the girls...he was so fun and such a little helper!

Last weekend I had my first home visit. Sammy and I were invited by one of our student's (Evence), to go with her and her family to the ancient temple city of Lu-Kang. We had a blast. Evence's family was so kind. I tried some traditional food (oyster omelet), and saw lots of cool Buddhist temples!

My favorite little SPE....Evence! She is full of spunk and so FUN! She's definitely gonna be a heart breaker!

Evence's little sister Claire, SOOOOO ADORABLE! I just love her. She was super shy at first, but mid-day, she was holding my hand...precious!

Our first stop in LuKang...Wenwu Temple.

Outside the Wunwu Temple and Wenkai academy!

Sammy and I with Evence's family! They were so nice to take us to LuKang.

Evence and I at the museum of Taiwanese Folkways

Baby shoes? ....think again....yes, these are woman's shoes, the ones they wore back in the day when binding feet was thought of as attractive. Ouch, so painful!

This little boy was outside of the museum teaching me how to play this Chinese game...I was horrible; thus, no pictures....he on the otherhand, was an expert.

Cupid's shrine....so colorful!

Cutest lil' family ever - Evence, her dad, and sister Claire

Strikin a pose at the Long-Shan Temple...I'm such a cheerleader. This was the first Buddhist temple built in Taiwan around 1653
